Caller ID Requirements

Phonevite now checks the ownership of phone numbers used with our services as part of the STIR/SHAKEN framework.

On March 31, 2020, the FCC issued a mandate known as STIR/SHAKEN to combat spoofed calls. STIR/SHAKEN ensures more reliable and secure communication by validating caller identity, reducing spam and fraud, and increasing overall trust in phone interactions.

With STIR/SHAKEN, verifying a caller’s number has become standard practice. This is done through a process called attestation, where carriers assign different levels of trust to each call based on how well they can verify the caller's identity.

When you make a call, your phone carrier checks to confirm that you’re the actual owner of the number, using attestation levels like a trust rating for your call:

  • Full Attestation (A): Your carrier confirms you own the number.
  • Partial Attestation (B): The carrier knows where the call comes from but isn’t fully sure it’s your number.
  • Gateway Attestation (C): The carrier has little information about the call’s origin.

Most users won’t notice this process, as it happens in the background.

Why might your Caller ID fail verification?

In some cases, Caller IDs fail number ownership verification for the following reasons:

  • No attestation level: Your carrier may not support STIR/SHAKEN.
  • Attestation level B or C: Your carrier indicates that the call may not be from the verified owner of the number.
  • Call forwarding: Complex call flows from forwarded calls can fail verification. In this case, use the original number.
  • International calls: Calls originating from international numbers are not supported.

If your call fails verification, we recommend using a different phone number for recording and sending your message. You can also contact your carrier to investigate why the call isn’t providing a valid attestation.
